Where's the Best Spot to Install Your EV Charger?

Are you looking to install an electric car charger, but are unsure of exactly where it should be installed? If so, then you’ve come to the right place.

Here at Scott Electrical, we supply a variety of electrical products, including EV chargers and accessories. In this blog, we’ll explore the best spots for EV charger installation, so rest assured that you’re able to install your EV charger with ease.

Before we begin discussing where to install your EV charger, let’s first talk about several considerations that you should make:

  • Connection - home charging points that are controlled via app will often require a Wi-Fi connection. This means that the location of your EV charger will need to be in an area that receives signal and can be connected to the internet.
  • Charging cable - the length of your charging cable is important to ensure that it can reach your car from the charging point (you can always buy a longer cable if needed)!
  • Safety - safety should be a top priority when it comes to the location of your EV charger; it should not pose a safety risk to others (i.e tripping over cables).

So, what are the best places for your EV charger?

Best Spots: Garage

If you have a garage, this is ideally the best place to install your EV charger. The garage itself should have adequate wiring and power, allowing the EV charger to be connected to charge your vehicle.

Best Spots: Driveway

Despite the garage being the ideal location for EV chargers, not all Kiwis may have a garage or have a garage with signal/power.

As a result, a question that always gets asked is: “Can EV chargers be installed outside?”

Yes! EV chargers can be installed outside, sometimes on an exterior wall or on a post that’s next to where you usually park your car. For the latter, trenches may need to be made to bury the cabling, which can lead to more expenses. However, the former can still be a suitable option.
