What Type of Electrical Cable Do You Need?

Not sure where to start? Here's a quick breakdown of the most common applications we supply cable for.

Residential and House Wiring

For new builds, renovations, and rewires, flat TPS is the standard. Most lighting and power circuits run on 1.5mm² or 2.5mm² twin core and earth, with air conditioning and larger loads stepping up to 4mm² or 6mm². All our TPS building cables meet AS/NZS 5000.2.

Browse our TPS cables range for flat, circular, and SWA options.

Commercial and Industrial Fit-Outs

When cables need to run exposed, through conduit, or in environments with mechanical risk, single-insulated building wire is the right call.

Our conduit wire range covers the sizes used across commercial, industrial, and infrastructure installs.

Sub-Mains, Motor Circuits, and Heavy-Duty Power

Need a reliable power cable NZ suppliers actually stock in depth? This is it. We carry PVC multicore, SWA armoured, and XLPE options across copper and aluminium conductors, sized to suit light commercial all the way through to utility-grade installs.

Machinery Controls and Automation

Control and instrument cable for industrial plants, process systems, and automated equipment. We carry screened, unscreened, SWA, and intrinsically safe options across a wide range of conductor counts.

Structured Cabling and Comms Cabinet Patching

Need patch leads for a structured cabling job or comms cabinet? We stock Cat6 UTP copper patch leads in a range of lengths and colours, plus multimode and single-mode fibre patch leads. All from DYNAMIX and Digilink, brands the data industry knows.

We Help You Source Electrical Cables That Meet NZ Standards

All cables sold by Scott Electrical are sourced from established manufacturers and meet the applicable AS/NZS standards.

For general building wiring, that's AS/NZS 5000.2 for TPS and AS/NZS 5000.1 for single-core XLPE and PVC cables.

For underground and high-voltage applications, we stock cable to AS/NZS 4026 and AS/NZS 5000.1.

If you're specifying cable for a project and need to confirm the standard, SKU, or conductor size, our team is easy to reach and can confirm stock availability before you commit.

Running Cable? Don't Forget the Support System

Getting the right electrical cable is only part of the job. You'll also need the right products to protect, route, and terminate it properly.

  • Cable management - cable ties, clips, markers, and labelling accessories to keep your install neat and code-compliant
  • Conduit, duct, and cable support - rigid conduit, flexible conduit, cable tray, cable ladder, trunking, and mechanical support systems

Both sections are stocked for residential, commercial, and industrial applications, so you won't have to source support products from a separate supplier.

FAQs

What's the difference between TPS cable and conduit wire?

TPS (Thermoplastic Sheathed) cable is a flat or circular multi-core cable with an outer sheath, designed for direct installation in walls, ceilings, and floors without additional protection. Conduit wire is single-insulated and must be run inside conduit or trunking to provide mechanical protection. Most residential installs use TPS; conduit wire is more common in commercial and industrial settings where cables are exposed.

What cable do I need for a power point circuit?

For a standard 10A power point circuit in a New Zealand home, 2.5mm² flat TPS (twin core and earth) is the typical choice, wired in accordance with AS/NZS 3000. For high-load circuits like ovens or air conditioning, your electrician will size the cable appropriately to the load.

Do you sell cable by the metre or roll?

We stock cable in standard roll lengths, typically 50m, 100m, or 500m drum quantities, depending on the product. Some products are available in shorter lengths; check individual product listings for available pack sizes.

What are patch leads used for?

Patch leads (also called patch cables) are short, pre-terminated cables used to connect devices in a structured cabling system, typically inside a comms cabinet or server rack. At Scott Electrical, we stock Cat6 copper patch leads and fibre patch leads for data and network applications.

Can I order electrical cable online and get it delivered?

Yes. Our full cable catalogue is available to order online. We supply nationwide across New Zealand. Trade account holders can also access pricing online once logged in.
